BEO2255 APPLIED STATISTICS FOR BUSINESS Assignment 1: Group Assignment
Data Collection and Questionnaire Design
Marks 10
Due in Week 4 Tutorial Class
This assignment is a group assignment that aims in enhancing student’s knowledge in formulating and justifying an appropriate sampling method to obtain information from a target population and constructing an appropriate questionnaire.
The assignment contains 3 different parts:
- Identifying a suitable topic to investigate/research
- Constructing an appropriate methodology to collect data
- Preparing a draft questionnaire
Identifying a suitable topic to investigate/research
As you are required to design a questionnaire, your first task is to choose a topic that is suitable to investigate/research. This can be something that you are interested in understanding. Or else it can be a related topic in economics, finance, and management or in general business area. This topic can be something that the business community, the government policy makers or the general public have an interest in. When choosing the topic, you should consider how appropriate the topic is, in terms of its usefulness, ability to complete within a given period and a budget.
Constructing an appropriate methodology to collect data
Once the topic is chosen, identify and outline an appropriate methodology to collect the data. In this case, you are not required to collect data but recommend a methodology in your report.
Preparing a draft questionnaire
A questionnaire should be developed as a part of the implementation of research methodology. The draft questionnaire can be either for a mail survey or an internet survey. The questions should all relate to the topic you are presumably investigating/researching.
In designing the draft questionnaire, you are advised to consider the following factors:
- Number of questions
- Nature of questions
- Order of questions
- Whether different types of questions are properly included (i.e. close
ended and open ended questions).
- Whether enough thought is given about tabulating and analyzing data.
Which kind of data you are collecting and which statistical measures can
be applied.
- You are required to explain why you are asking those questions and how
those questions contribute to research objectives?
- You are also required to check the language for spelling or grammatical
errors.
Note that your questionnaire must contain with the propose title and a brief introduction explaining the respondents precisely the nature of the research, objective of the research and the manner that you are going to use data collected in this research.Evaluation Criteria
Evaluation will be based on the overall quality of the written report and how well it demonstrates your understanding of key concepts in research design, methodology and questionnaire designing covered in the unit. To receive maximum marks, your report must demonstrate high level of creativity, professionalism and appropriateness.
Format of the written report:
- Research Title
- Table of content
- Introduction
Background to the study and a brief rationale for proposed research topic.
- Research Process/methodology
- Research objectives: In your report, you must specify the research objectives. In this case, you should identify the overall research objective and specific objectives.
- Method of collecting data: A suitable method of data collection among survey technique, observation method, and experimental research. In case of choosing survey techniques identify the appropriate survey technique.
- Sample size and sampling method: Identify appropriate sample size and a sampling method.
- Research process and errors: Identify sampling and non-sampling errors and make recommendations on how sampling and non-sampling errors can be minimized.
5. Draft questionnaire Presentation guidelines
- You are required to write the report to suit the academic standards.
- Attached an assignment declaration.
- All tables and figures should contain a title that clearly explains the content.
- You are required to submit the electronic version to the VUC Dropbox and
handover the hard copy to the tutor for marking.
