EXERCISE 6
UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY
DEPARTMENT OF GEOMATICS ENGINEERING ENGO 351: INTRODUCTION TO GIS
This exercise is to get the students acquainted with tasks related to building, management, and querying of a geographic database in PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
The exercise will be carried out in Groups of 2-3 students. Each Group must perform the following steps:
1. Collect a set of Shapefiles for point, line and polygon geometries and provide a short description of them (source, study area, attributes, projection, metadata etc.) [DOC1]
2. Prepare and load the Shapefiles content into PostgreSQL/PostGIS (@GAIA Server) using DB Manager (in QGIS). Use an account and a database that was setup for you on the Server (for Exercise 4). Provide a report on the population of the geo-database [DOC2]
3. Execute a series of queries (9-12) to extract data/info from the geo-database. The queries must involve: (a) pure thematic, (b) pure spatial, and (c) spatio-thematic predicates. Visualize the result using Quantum GIS. Provide a report of the queries and the corresponding results [DOC3]
Deliverables:
a. Shapefiles used.
b. Database (on GAIA Server)
c. Three reports [DOC1,2,3]
Upload documents (a,c) on D2L > Assessment > Dropbox > Exercise 6
Exercise to be carried out in groups of 2-3 students with one deliverable per group. Handed out: March 13. Due: March 27 2019.
This Exercise is optional and will provide a 7% bonus to your final grade.
