Introduction
Part 1 – Using Windows PowerShell to install IIS (Server)
Open a Windows PowerShell session with elevated user rights. To do this, right click PowerShell on the taskbar, and then click Run as administrator.

Load the Server Manager module into the Windows PowerShell session before working with Server Manager cmdlets. Type the following, and then press Enter.
Import-Module Servermanager (note: not case sensitive)
If you do not know the command name of the Web Server Service role that you want to install, type the following, and then press Enter to return a list of all command names in the Name column. 

Get-WindowsFeature *web*

Using the command names from #3 install the following Web Server, IIS management Console and FTP Server with –whatif at the end of your command and then press Enter to test the install.

Add-WindowsFeature _____________, ______________, _____________ -whatif

When you use the -whatif parameter with any command that attempts to make changes to your system, PowerShell will notify you of the changes the command will make but actually doesn’t implement them. In this way, you can validate the changes being made even before making them.
Let’s run the same command again but this time we will omit the –whatif parameter so that the role is actually installed. To restart the server after the role is installed, you can append the –Restart parameter to automatically restart the server once the role is installed.
After PowerShell finishes installing use the Get-WindowsFeature command to show all of the installed features. Leave this window open for evaluation.
Get-WindowsFeature *web*

Part 2 – Creating a Virtual Directory (Server)
Click Tools on Server Manager and click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
In the tree, click the arrow in front of the server name to expand the folders.
Also in the tree, click the arrow sign in front of the Sites folder.
Right-click Default Web Site in the tree and click Add Virtual Directory, as shown below.

Create a folder under the user’s folder on E: drive named WebDocumentsJU, where the last two characters are your initials.
Enter an alias for the virtual directory, which users will employ to access it, such as Webdoc plus you initials at the end, such as WebdocJU. Also enter the path to the physical folder you crated in the previous step, such as E:\Users\WebDocumentsJU (or use the Browse button to find it). Click OK.
Click Edit Permissions under the Actions column then the Security tab to view the current permissions.
Click the Sharing tab.
How can you set up this folder for sharing?

Click Cancel in the Properties dialog box.
Leave the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager window open for the next activity.

Part 3 – Configuring a Web Site (Server)

Open IIS Manager, if you have closed it.
Click Default Web Site in the tree under the Sites folder.
Right-click Default Web Site to see the shortcut menu and review its contents. Point to Manage Web Site.
How can you rename the Web site? Also how can you restart the Web site if it is stopped?

Click the pointer in a blank area to close the open menus.
Double-click Default Document in the middle pane. Notice that Defualt.htm is set up to display first when the client connects to the Web site without specifying a file to access. Follow the instructions in the window and make iistart.htm display first. Click iistart.htm and click Move Up (click Yes, if prompted). Continue clicking Move Up to move iistart.htm to the top of the list.
Click the back arrow in the upper-left side of the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager window.
Double-click Directory Browsing in the middle pane.
In the right pane, click Enable to enable directory browsing.

Click the back arrow in the upper-left side of the Internet Information Services (ISS) Manager window.
Right-click Default Web Site in the tree, click Edit Permissions, and click the security tab.
Click Users (domainname\Users) under Group or user names: to view the security given to general users.
Click Cancel in the Properties dialog box.
In the right pane, find the Configure section and click Limits.
Enter 240 in the Connection time-out (in seconds) box to increase the amount of time a user can be connected without taking action.
Click the box for Limit number of connections. Enter 500 as the number of simultaneous connections so you can control the load on the server. This number you should monitor in the future. If the server is frequently overloaded with users and performing slowly, you can reduce this number, for example by 50 at a time, as needed. Click OK.
To test your web server open internet explorer on the workstation (windows 10) and type 192.168.81.XX (XX- your server IP), the default page should appear.

Part 4 – Displaying your own web site

Open IIS Manager, if you have closed it.
Click Default Web Site in the tree under the Sites folder.
Double-click Default Document in the middle pane. Notice that iistart.htm is set up to display first. Follow the instructions in the window and make index.htm display first. Click index.htm and click Move Up (click Yes, if prompted). Continue clicking Move Up to move index.htm to the top of the list.
Open notepad and create a simple web page using HTML and your domain name for the heading, add some color.
Click File Save As and save your web page as index.htm in the following directory C:\inetpub\wwwroot.
To test your web site open a new browser window in internet explorer on the workstation (windows 10) and type your computer name (SXXXXXXX), the index page you create should appear.
Leave this window open for evaluation.
