COURSE DESCRIPTION AND PREREQUISITES
see Calendar descriptions for STAT 513 and 413.
COURSE OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
To acquire algorithmic and programming knowledge pertinent for the algorithmic imple- mentation of methods in statistics and related fields.
GRADING POLICY, COMPONENTS AND DATES The raw cumulative score will be com- puted from the performance in
• four homework assignments (40%)
(tentatively due Jan 27, Feb 10, Mar 13, Apr 3)
• midterm examination (21%) (February 14, in class)
• final examination (39%)
(3 hours, check Bear Tracks when and where; likely Tuesday, April 15, 2020, 14:00)
The scores thus obtained will determine the final grade in the following manner: those who achieve 91% or more will get A; 76% or more qualifies for B; 61% or more guarantees C, and 51% or more the grade (passing in STAT 413) D. Fine distinctions (+ and -) will be determined accordingly, and may be influenced by the scores of the whole (combining both STAT 413 and 513) class – as well as one or several of the above cutpoints may be lowered if circumstances render it necessary.
OTHER Grades are unofficial until approved by the Department and/or Faculty offering the course. Samples of representative evaluative course material will be made available through the course web page.
The date for the Deferred Final Examination for Winter Term 2019 classes has been set for Saturday 4 May 2019 at 9:00 (am). Students will be required to meet outside of CAB 357 at 8:30 that morning to register.
There are neither deferred term exams nor extended deadlines for the homework. A student who cannot complete the assignment or misses a term examination because of an incapacitating illness, severe domestic affliction or other compelling reasons can apply for an excused absence. To apply for an excused absence, a student must inform the instructor within two working days following the scheduled date of the term work or term exam missed, or as soon as the student is able, having regard to the circumstances underlying the absence. In all cases, instructors may request adequate documentation to substantiate the reason for the absence at their discretion. If the absence is excused, the missed component weight will be deferred to the final exam.
1
For an excused absence where the cause is religious belief, a student must contact the instructor within two weeks of the start of Winter classes to request accommodation for the term (including the final exam, where relevant). Instructors may request adequate documentation to substantiate the student request.
A student who cannot write the final examination due to incapacitating illness, severe domestic affliction or other compelling reasons can apply for a deferred final examination. Students who failed at the start of term to request exam accommodations for religious beliefs are expected to follow the normal deferred final examination process. Such an application must be made to the student’s Faculty office within two working days of the missed examination and must be supported by appropriate documentation or a Statutory Declara- tion. (https://calendar.ualberta.ca/content.php?catoid=29&navoid=7238#Attendance). Deferred exam- inations are a privilege and not a right; there is no guarantee that a deferred examination will be granted. Misrepresentation of Facts to gain a deferred examination is a serious breach of the Code of Student Behaviour. The date for the Deferred Final Examination for Winter Term 2019 classes has been set for Saturday 4 May 2019 at 9:00 (am). Students will be required to meet outside of CAB 357 at 8:30 that morning to register.
The University of Alberta is committed to the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty. Students are expected to be familiar with these standards regarding academic honesty and to uphold the policies of the Uni- versity in this respect. Students are particularly urged to familiarize themselves with the provisions of the Code of Student Behavior (online at https://www.ualberta.ca/governance/resources/policies-standards-and-codes-of-conduct/code-of-student-behaviour) and avoid any behaviour which could potentially result in suspicions of cheating, plagiarism, misrepresentation of facts and/or participation in an offence. Academic dishonesty is a serious offence and can result in suspension or expulsion from the University.
All forms of dishonesty are unacceptable at the University. Any offense will be reported to the Associate Dean of Science who will determine the disciplinary action to be taken. Cheating, plagiarism and misrepresentation of facts are serious offenses. Anyone who engages in these practices will receive at minimum a grade of zero for the exam or paper in question and no opportunity will be given to replace the grade or redistribute the weights. As well, in the Faculty of Science the sanction for cheating on any examination will include a disciplinary failing grade (NO EXCEPTIONS) and senior students should expect a period of suspension or expulsion from the University of Alberta.
