The consultancy firm 313/301, where you work, is bidding to do a new piece of work for an existing client, the St Andrews Power Distribution Company (SAPDC), utilising some of the electrical demand data they are capturing from their network.
Task 1 – Predicting Demand
A sample data set has been supplied, by SAPDC, of electrical demand measured at primary and secondary feeders, but it is only partially complete. A whole months’ worth of data has been provided for the primary feeder and only half a month for the secondary. Your boss at 313/301 has tasked you to investigate this sample set and report back what you can find out. Some of the points your boss mentioned for reporting are listed below, but the choice of techniques and what to include in your report is at your discretion. A specific request of the client though is that you must make a prediction of the half hourly demand for the second half of the month, for the secondary feeder.
In the report your boss wants you to justify your choice of model with:
• Commentary on the characteristics of the data: spread, expected value, potential dependencies with supporting visualisation where appropriate
• A description of the methodology used for your model design and learning and the criteria on which you selected it by
Task 2 – Feeder Loading
Separately, SAPDC have been approached by developers looking to build a new housing estate in their distribution area. The proposed street plan means that the secondary feeders in the area would have the following numbers of houses connected to them:

SAPDC have supplied a large data set of measured loads at domestic properties and in each case the footprint of said properties for your use in determining the loading at each of the feeders for the proposed housing estate. The domestic building demand data should have both a linear () and a quadratic () line fitted to it using the standard 313/301 FIT methodology, and the load at each feeder calculated in each case.
In your report back to SAPDC you should demonstrate your line fits, explain the methods used, compare and comment on the model that best captures the relationship of demand to house size. Having calculated the demand at each feeder you should comment on the distribution of demand amongst them.
Required Submissions
Your boss requires a report on your activities, no longer than two pages which can be taken to the Chairperson of SAPDC in a fortnight (so late-ness is not an option). Alongside the explanation of methods used and results, your boss has asked for visualisations (either graphs or figures) of data and/or results. It is essential that the document submitted is in the company format and is client-ready. Lastly, there may be a member of SAPDC’s technical team at the meeting so a spreadsheet of the results should also be submitted to your boss.
