Detailed design should aim to:
Submission 4
• Produce a design package which encompasses the final decision on every matter related to design specifications, construction and cost.
• Provide the full design of every part and component of the building by collaboration of all concerned.
Design information should include:
• Drawings, schedules and specifications which have sufficient information for costing and will enable the contractor to build.
• Pre-construction CDM risk assessment (Designer’s Risk Assessment).

Steel Design
Design considerations
• Connections between beams and columns are pinned.
• Maximum allowable deflection for beams is span/250.
• Steel purlin roof system. Plan bracing required, but calculations are not necessary.
• All columns has to be tied in two directions.
Civil Engineering Design Practice I Lecture 6
EGA200
Steel Design Tasks
• Finalised layout for the grids you are designing (Level 2 and Roof), and identify key structural elements
• Load rundown calculations
• List all the load cases and combinations
• Design of steel elements
– All the key roof beams on the grids for your group
– All the key columns on the grids for your group
– Design of typical beam to column connections
– Design of bracings for wind loading (can use STAAD Pro to calculate loads on structural elements)
• AutoCAD drawings:
– General Arrangement (GA) drawing, a plan of the grids your group is responsible for
with beams and columns clearly shown and state their sizes
– Elevations of different grids with beams, columns and bracing (if relevant) and state element sizes
– Detailed drawings of steel connections

Steel Design
Roof loading
Permanent Load
– Self weight of structure
– Roof loading (roof, services and insulation) – 2kN/m2
Imposed Load
– Snow loading – assume 1kN/m2 maximum
– Wind loading – calculate in accordance to Eurocode
– Loading during maintenance – 1kN/m2
Use notes from EG224 to carry out detailed design of steel beams and columns.

Submission 4 – Detailed Design Package
40% of the final mark, due on 28/04/2020
For the detailed design component of this module, each group will be allocated an area of the building to be designed in steel and an area of the building to be designed in concrete. By 28/04/2020 you must provide a detailed design package with detailed AutoCAD construction drawings for the following:
Steel Design Elements
Detailed design of beams
Detailed design of columns
Detailed design of bracings against wind loading Detailed design of connections
Concrete Design Elements
Detailed design of RC continuous floor slabs Detailed design of RC continuous beams Detailed design of a typical RC columns
Two steel design elements and two concrete design elements each!
The detailed design package will be submitted as group work. Each individual member of the group will be responsible for two steel design elements and two concrete design elements. Individual work must be checked by other group members and the final calculations and drawings will be put together to form the group detailed design package.
Assessment:
This submission will be graded based on the group output (weighting 50%) and individual output (weighting 50%).
