1. Complainer/Negative: The Crab
A whiner, critic, or obstructionist, often motivated by perfection. They object to everything, assert proposals will not work. They can deflate group optimism and block other’s goals. The feel powerless or refuse to bear responsibility.
2. Dominator/Hostile: The Shark
Hostile, aggressive, dominating and intimidating. Try to bully when they are blocked. Some will be task-focused, controlling and want the job done and are provoked by incomplete, specific tasks or actions not done. Others attack at random, typically to command attention.
3. Scrapper/Troublemaker: The Jellyfish
Hostile, aggressive, domineering and with expressive, blunt and confrontational remarks. They enjoy an argument and find debates and intellectual games challenging and rewarding.
4. Know-It-All/Arrogant: The Sea Lion
Want-to-be cocky experts believe they command unsurpassed information. They believe their values and opinions are right, (an inflated ego). They condescend, impose, are pompous, or arrogant toward others. Will make you feel like an idiot.
5. Talker/Motor Mouth: The Blowfish
Talk too much and dominate the “floor-time” at the expense of other group members opportunity to express themselves. They may have good ideas but also ramble.
6. Super Agreeable/“Yes Man:” The Sea agreeable, overly positive, optimistic, reasonable, sincere, and supportive. They are people-oriented and aim to please those nearby. They seek approval by giving approval. Sometimes they over-commit or are unreliable.
7. Under-Participator/Apathetic: The Flounder
These people have little to say in meetings, show no interest or are uncomfortable. Does not engage. They may be an exceptional listener, deeply reflective, or simply detached.
8. Shy/Quiet: The Clam
Silent, unresponsive people answer questions with a: yes, no, I don’t know, or a grunt.
9. Indecisive: The Octopus
Procrastinator who delay decisions (or fail to act). Add roadblocks or cause conflict when decisions are made. Motivated by perfection; they want more time to get things just right.
10. Entertainer/Comedian: The Dolphin
Uninvolved in the substance of group efforts; they make unrelated jokes and comments. They divert attention with distracting antics. Can be constructive when groups become tense and stressful.
