Executive Summary Pointers
An Executive Summary is written for your (big) boss who may not know you, a (premium)
client, or a (influential) magazine reader.
The Executive Summary is the narration of issues and the communication of their

resolutions in the form of a tale, without losing the feeling of curiosity, passion and purpose.
You are not so much as trying to summarize your study for an audience, as you are often a
tempting to influence decision makers using your conclusions.
You need to provide context in writing your essay, and should also include a cogent roundup
at the end. A common practice is to use 3 parts. You assume people will read Part 1 and then
maybe Part 3, but rarely Part 2.
Part 1 is where you bring your wide perspective to draw the big picture, in preparation for
Part 3 at the bottom. In Part 1, you situate your study under a bigger context, and bring
relevance to what you will do in Part 2.
Part 2 could largely deal with facts gleaned from surveys, research, data, etc. (or assigned
materials). Heavy-duty implications, recommendations (or extra unassigned references) can
be delayed to Part 3.
Even if Part 2 were not there, Part 1 should still flow smoothly into Part 3, perhaps needing
only mentions such as”.
. analyses had shown that…” in Part 3, where any analysis would
presumably be in Part 2.
Part 3 is the conclusion where you advise on corporate policy & executive decisions,
speculate on future data needs to understand industry development trend, suggest any
fruitful way of expanding your study, etc. Here you might extemporize on links to other
things not studied in Part 2, and bring in extraneous relevant info to the attention of senior
executives. It is frequently good to cite one or two memorable numbers (e.g., optimal sleep
duration for university students is 8.75 hours) for the reader to take away. Part 3 is where
you make your report really counts!
Please consider keeping each paragraph to six or fewer lines.
Your Executive Summary should be storytelling in plain English, normally with very simple
charts (that don’t need detailed explanations). Use tables instead of graphs only where
helpful. Except as a graded piece of work for a class, the Executive Summary should contain
no jargon whatsoever.
