Important details
• Test will be open on Tuesday 8th Sep, 11:40AM – 12:30PM; standby from 11:35.
• There are two sets of case study-like questions, with 2-4 sub questions each, in a single quiz
• The first case study will be a recorded interview question, similar to the individual interview for assignment 1.
• The second case study will be a typed short answer question.
• Each subquestion (a), (b), (c) will be part of the same set of question (i.e. question 1 & question 2)
Sample question 1
Answer this verbally (record your video and submit). First show your photo and ID and mention your name.
Your client hires you to design a new mobile app for designing or renovating homes. (Total 9 marks)
a) Explain three activities you can do to establish the requirements for this app (3 marks, max. 3
mins video)
b) What kind of user data you might collect based on two of those activities mentioned in (a) (2 marks, max 2 mins video)
c) At which stage of UCD process will you collect such a data mentioned in (b). Explain the benefit of doing so (2 marks, max 2 mins video)
d) To improve the affordance of such an app, provide one example of one feature you might want to consider and which design principle/heuristic it follows (2 marks, max 2 mins video)
Sample question 2
Analyse this interface. (Total 6 marks)
(a) Write three design principles or heuristics it violates (3 marks)
(b) Explain how this interface can be improved with respect to the aforementioned violation (3 marks)
Sample Q1 Example Answers / Hints Hints are highlighted in italics
• A) Example activities to establish the requirement includes: analyse competitor apps, survey the users of existing users of competitor house designing/renovating apps, etc… (We need 3 answers for the 3 marks)
• B) Data that we collect from competitor apps include their user attributes of existing users, such as…….. (provide examples given the scenario) ; Data we collect from survey includes answers to the survey questions designed to……..(expand based on the given scenario)
• C) Formative/Summative? Early/late? Alpha/Beta/ Final? Pick the one most appropriate for the scenario. Explain why? What’s the benefit of doing this in that stage?
• D) Feature to find the house style they like for example? Affordance → How to easily find this specific feature without sending the wrong cues about the interactions that are possible within the app? Which design principle that could be applicable? For example, prominence, as it will highlight the first point of control on interacting with the house style…
• As I mentioned during the briefing, there could be many different answers, the key is to be clear and be specific by answering each question with respect to the given scenario.
Sample Q2
• We have discussed this exact interface in Week 3 and the corresponding questions. Please revisit the slide and replay the lecture recording to recall the discussion
