Exam’s Underlying Concept • Impress the marker
– If you make the markers job easy they are more likely to be generous.
– Try to avoid large slabs of text, answer the question in point form.
– The marker have their list of answers in point form as well so listing those magic words is the fastest way to get the marks.
– If writing a slab of text helps you work through the question, place a point form summary at the end.
– Try to write neatly,
– Drawings to explain concepts are also good, flow charts etc.
Answer the question asked!
• Read the question
• Re-read the question
• Underline the key words in the question (you are permitted to write on the exam paper, we don’t however look at it or mark it.)
• If you answer the wrong question you will not get the marks
Multiple choice
• Youneedtowriteyourmultiplechoiceanswersin the booklet, not circle the exam paper.
• Writedownonlythecorrectanswer(s)inyour script book.
• Youwilllose1markforeachincorrectanswer(s) for a minimum of 0 for each multiple choice question. (negative marks do not propagate between questions)
• Feelfreetostateassumptionformultiplechoice but keep it short.
Getting those marks
• Theexaminerislookingtogiveyoumarks, make it easy for them to do so
• Showallyourworking, ifyougetitwrongand you have working you might get partial marks
• Stateyourassumptions, ifyouareunsurewhat the question is asking then explain what you think it is asking
• Ifyouhavetwointerpretationsofthequestion answer them both and explain each assumption
Let us find you marks
• Nevereraseanything, ifitiswrongputalight diagonal line through what you think is wrong
• Ifwearetryingtofindmoremarksforyouwe may look at things you thought were wrong and you crossed it out we might give you marks for it anyway
• Communicatewithyourmarker, ifyoucrossed something out and want to uncross it write in the margins, “please mark this” rather than wasting time uncrossing it.
Don’t lose marks
• Adding items that are plain wrong will result in the loss of marks unless you have crossed it out.
• Brain dumps and not filtering will result in loss of marks.
• If you have crossed it out you will not lose marks for it.

The Marking Process
• Theexamismarkedbymultiplepeople
• Eachquestionismarkedbyasingleperson, this makes it fair and consistent
• Somequestionsaremarkedharderthanothers,if you complain about being marked hard we are unlikely to change your mark as everyone else will be marked at the same difficulty
• Afterallpapersaremarkedthenwegobackand if one marker marked really hard or easy we will scale the question up or down
Aim of the marking process
• Average mark for the subject to be a bell curve around 65%
• The best 10% of students get 80% or higher
• All students who demonstrate they
understand what they did get 50% or higher
• Students who have no idea will be failed
Exam is a hurdle
• Ifyourexammarkislessthan50%youwillfail the subject no matter what your assignment total brings you up to
• Theexamistheretomakesureyoudidyour assignment, including understanding what the code does
• Iftheexamisunder50%asecondmarkerwill review the entire exam paper to try to find you extra marks, this is where having working really helps
Review of your exam
• Attheendoftheyearyoumaylookatyourexam paper by replying to the email invitation
• Ifyouareunhappywiththemarkyoumaywritea formal letter stating what you are unhappy with
• Remembertheexamsaremarkedconsistently,if your complaint is that you were marked very hard on a question that is unlikely to get you a change in marks
• Ifyouspotanaddinguperrorthatmightbring you extra marks
Ticks and crosses
• When looking at your exam paper you will find many marking styles.
• Some markers tick each page they mark to indicate they have looked at it
• Some markers tick for each correct point you get
• Some markers cross for each incorrect mark you get
• Don’t assume a tick is a mark
Good Luck
• Make sure you understand what you did in the
assignment and why you did it.
• Make sure you can logically work through a
problem.
• Read through the lecture slides.
