Workshop 4: Core Concepts – Accessibility
Part 1: Theory
1. Name and define two impairments and disabilities that need to be considered in the context of
accessibility. Write no more than 1-2 sentences per element.
2. Explain the two main approaches to accessibility, making technology accessible, and using technology to make the world accessible. Write no more than 3-4 sentences per approach.
3. Identify and explain two challenges when applying accessibility guidelines that arise from a developer’s perspective. Write no more than 2-3 sentences per challenge.
4. Give an example of how user involvement in technology design can support accessibility. Write no more than 3-4 sentences.
Part 2: Practical Exercises
1. Explore the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines via http://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG20/glance/Overview.html. Find positive and negative examples for the following areas of the guidelines:
– Perceivable – Provide text alternatives for non-text content.
– Perceivable – Create content that can be presented in different ways.
– Operable – Make all functionality available from a keyboard.
– Operable – Do not use content that causes seizures.
– Repeatable – Make text readable and understandable.
For each of the examples, provide a one-sentence explanation why you think they are positive or negative. For negative examples, write 1-2 sentences on how they could be improved.
2. How could technology support people with visual impairments at the grocery store? Identify a shopping task that would be hard to complete for a person with a visual impairment, and briefly outline a technical solution that could provide support. Write no more than 4-5 sentences, considering (1) advantages of your approach, (2) disadvantages, and (3) the appropriateness of the interface technology that you are suggesting.
