Workshop 3: Core Concepts – Usability and Design Heuristics
Part 1: Theory
1. Name and explain the three main elements of the ISO 9241 definition of
usability. Write no more than 1-2 sentences per element.
2. Define the concept of usability heuristics in 2-3 sentences, and give an example of a popular set of heuristics.
3. State and explain one advantage and one disadvantage of usability heuristics. Write no more than 2-3 sentences each.
4. Does the ISO 9241 definition of usability apply to games? Explain why (not). Write no more than 4-5 sentences.
Part 2: Practical Exercises
1. Visit IKEA’s website at http://www.ikea.co.uk and assess whether it adheres to Shneiderman’s 8 Golden Rules. For each rule, specifically explain in 1-2 sentences how it is implemented, or why it is not fulfilled.
2. Find a (different!) web-based example for each of Nielsen’s 10 Usability Heuristics. Take a screenshot of the website, mark the relevant aspect (if possible), and explain in 1-2 sentences how the heuristic is implemented.
