PRACTICE 1: BREAKING PASSWORDS

Description
The goal of this lab is to deepen your use of password cracking tools. The tool used in class, John the Ripper, should be used as a minimum. To carry out this exercise, you will be assigned a file containing 10 passwords for a Linux system and you will have to find out as many of them as possible.
Tips:
• Make sure you know and make use of all the possibilities that the John the Ripper tool offers you.
• Use as many dictionaries as you see fit.
• Create rules for generation, combination, etc. following the typical patterns seen in real passwords.
• Please note that passwords are between 4 and 12 characters long. Memory all the relevant
• information that you used to obtain each password.
Deliverable
Each group of practices has to deliver a report that includes the following sections:
1. All the steps followed in the process of configuring the tool and the artifacts used, such as dictionaries used, rules generated, etc.
2. Result of the exercise, indicating the number of passwords found and the time required to obtain them.
Delivery dates
The delivery and defense dates of the practice are as follows:
• Delivery: March 1 – 23:55.
• Defense (face-to-face): March 9.
