Live Lecture Chat – March 8, 2021
10:53:07 From James, April to Everyone : Professor Bailey, I have a random question while we wait.. what is your favorite shader effect you’ve seen in a movie? besides Mandalorian-related graphics 🙂
As you’ll see in the RenderMan notes, I have a soft spot for the early uses for CG in hand- drawn-animation movies because of the quantum leap in story-telling ability it allowed. More recently, I really liked the water effect in Moana because it had to act like water but still have an obvious body-language personality. You’re right – I have really enjoyed The Mandalorian.
10:58:37 From Jacob Eckroth(He/Him/His) to Everyone : I haven’t seen a movie in a movie theatre in over a year
10:59:08 From Jacob Eckroth(He/Him/His) to Everyone : excited for Godzilla v. King Kong to come out on HBO at the same time as in theatres should be a fun romp 11:01:34 From Jacob Eckroth(He/Him/His) to Everyone : I honestly can’t wait to see a movie in theatres once its safe
11:01:38 From Jacob Eckroth(He/Him/His) to Everyone : I miss that feeling
11:01:55 From Jacob Eckroth(He/Him/His) to Everyone : when you watch a movie at home you are always like distracted with your phone, but in theatres you have to be fully immersed
I feel your pain. Going to movie theaters has always been an “escape” for me. I miss having that escape.
Class Evaluation specific to this class (please do it, it is really helpful to me):

11:07:32 From Zach Parsons to Everyone : I couldn’t find the parallax mapping notes for the life of me, can someone tell me where the notes talk about it?
11:08:33 From Lubna Alzamil to Everyone : it is in the demo at the end of the live lecture
11:09:01 From Zach Parsons to Everyone : Which lecture? 11:11:06 From Lubna Alzamil to Everyone : here is the link 11:11:20 From Lubna Alzamil to Everyone : https://media.oregonstate.edu/media/t/1_35l8rbua
11:11:43 From Lubna Alzamil to Everyone : starts at min 4:40
11:31:30 From Koning, Jonathan Scott to Everyone : I wonder what took them longer to animate? [Beauty and the Beast ballroom scene.] That one scene or the rest of the hand-drawn film?
The story I heard is that they were given a date deadline and so they piled in as many shader effects as they could do before that deadline. That is, it wasn’t a case of “How long will it take to do this?”, but rather a case of “What can you do by this date?”

11:45:44 From Jacob Eckroth(He/Him/His) to Everyone : do we get things like sliders in RenderMan?
No, RenderMan is essentially a batch rendering program. All the studios have written front- ends, however, to allow them to interactively arrange the scene, set the lighting, and experiment with uniform variable values. That program, then, writes the RIB file automatically.
12:03:41 From Mahmoud, Ibrahim to Everyone : I think you covered this already, but why is the spherical subdivision code in the geometry shader and not the tessellation shader?
We actually did it in both geometry and tessellation shaders. Each type of shader is capable of expanding geometry.
12:10:50 From Mahmoud, Ibrahim to Everyone : quick question: would it be possible to compute the mandelbrot using a compute shader? or would a fragment shader be better with that?
I know it can be done in the fragment shader (because we did it that way). I am pretty sure a compute shader would work too, except that you would then need the extra step to get the graphical representation to the screen. Doing it in the fragment shader takes care of that step for you;
12:37:36 From Koning, Jonathan Scott to Everyone :

12:37:49 From Koning, Jonathan Scott to Everyone : Skip to 8:24 for the magic lens effect
Not sure it’s a magic lens. I think it is just a “noisy refraction” to show that you are underneath the waterfall. It’s a nice effect, though, no matter what it is.
13:22:58 From Arman H. to Everyone : My favorite game currently, with some good graphics! https://www.escapefromtarkov.com/
13:30:53 From Jiroux, Kira Lynn to Everyone :

[Acrylic paint-pouring art.] Very cool analog effects!
13:38:14 From Jiroux, Kira Lynn to Everyone :
