Module overview: The History of Artificial Intelligence
In this module, we will turn back the clock and look at the history of artificial intelligence. In any field, history is important. First, history is important for history’s sake: it is interesting and valuable. Second, history is important because when we understand the past, we can improve our future. If we understand the successes of the past, we can learn from them and try to replicate the way things were done. If we understand the failures and weaknesses, we can aim not to repeat them.
The link between the history and the ethics of artificial intelligence is important. The ethical problems arising in artificial intelligence can be linked back to our past: things that we, as a community, did or did not do. In this module, we look at history for three reasons:

1. For history’s sake. The history of artificial intelligence, and computing more broadly, is interesting. It is a relatively short history, but much has happened over the past few decades to revolutionise the world we live in.
2. Hype. There is a lot of interest around artificial intelligence right now, and rightly so: there are many techniques that have proven to be powerful and useful. Many people claim that we have reached a new era where machines will soon be able to solve general problems better than humans. But when we study history, we see that such claims have been made before. From an ethical perspective, it is irresponsible to make broad claims about what computer will and will not be able to do in the future without clear evidence.
3. Diversity. We will look at some of the key people in the history of computing and artificial intelligence, and we will discuss how a lack of diversity in AI is at the heart of many of the problems we see in AI. We will just scratch the surface of these problems in this module, but it will be a recurring theme throughout the subject.
Module Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
Discuss key eras of the development of artificial intelligence.
Apply lessons from the past to discussions in the present.
Make new links between the way we currently build AI, and the effects it has on the people that use it
Activities and resources
In this module, there are several related activities and resources:
