The purpose of this assignment is to give students hands-on, practical skills on completing qualitative data
analysis using open coding. Using the given data, students will manually code and analyze data and then write up
their results.
The data provided are responses of several teachers who were asked the question – “What major factors lead
you into teaching?”
Your task is to read over the responses and determine the factors that seem to predominate. What reasons are
included in these responses? You may need to look at closely related wordings from several responses and
generate a category name that is not mentioned explicitly.
• Form groups of 2-3 students
• Review the lecture on open coding
• Review the data given and develop your themes
• Code the data
o You will need to submit your coded data
For example, a picture of the coded data on paper or a softcopy with highlighted sections for
each code.
For example: Code Schedule: highlighted in blue, or given the number 1
• Codelist
o create a list of codes with definitions.
For example: Time off, summer off, love of teaching etc
o If there are too many codes, group them into categories
For example: Schedule: vacations, flexibility, coordinated with children’s schedule
• Summarize your data
o For example – create a table as shown below to show the relationship between your codes and
categories
o Sometimes respondents will mention more than one factor. You will need to decide how to handle
o Do a frequency count and calculate the percentages (this will assist you in writing your report)
Codes Categories Frequencies Percentage
Deliverables (one submission per group)
Write a 1-2 page double spaced (APA) report of your data analysis process and findings (include quotes),
describe all the steps you followed in your analysis, how many codes, categories, and stories you identified.
