Test Logistics and Information
Test 1 Coverage
Test 3 will cover all of the course material from this term up to and including hashing. You are
responsible for everything on the weekly modules W2-W6 (except Quicksort), lectures, and
problem sets.
Aids Allowed
You are required to submit an aid sheet for this test, even if you do not use one. If you are not
using an aid sheet, you must still submit a file indicating that you did not create/use an aid sheet
(e.g., submit a document that says “this is my empty aid sheet”).
You may use a single one-sided aid sheet that you prepare yourself. It should be an 8.5 x 11
sheet of paper on which you have written or printed whatever you wish. Please submit the aid
sheet when you start the test. You must upload and submit your aid sheet with your test before
the due time to avoid the 10% penalty. During the test, this should be your only aid. You may not
reference your course notes, your textbook, any other textbook or notes. You may not look at
any websites other than MarkUs or Piazza during your 120 minutes. You may not
communicate with anyone other than the course staff during your test.
Please note: You will receive a 10% deduction if you do not submit your aid sheet to MarkUs with
the test.
Timing and format
You may type your answers or hand-write them legibly, on paper or using a tablet and stylus.
You may submit your answers as a single document or as multiple documents.
You may name your file(s) any way you want (there is no “required file”) but if you can please
put questions in separate files named in some helpful way (e.g. Q1, Q2, Q3, etc.)
You must submit your answers in PDF or as photos (JPEG/JPG/GIF/PNG/HEIC/HEIF).
Other formats (e.g., Word documents, LaTeX source files) are NOT accepted — you must

export or compile documents to PDF, and convert images into a supported format (just
changing the name of a file does NOT change its type)!
The test will be set up just before 11:30 (ET) on Saturday June 19, as a Timed Assessment on
MarkUs. When you click on the Term Test 1 link to start it, you will see a Download button you
can use to download the “starter files” — meaning the test questions. These may be provided
as a single PDF document, or as multiple separate PDF documents (one for each question).
You will be able to download all required documents at once, and you can upload your
answers one at a time, or as a single combined document, whichever is most convenient for
you, at any time during your test period.
As a reminder, Timed Assessments work as follows.
You may begin the assessment at any time after 11:30 am and before 11:59:59 AM ET on
Saturday June 19. (As usual, all times are indicated on a 24-hour clock in the ET
timezone.) MarkUs is very strict about these times, for your own sake, please ensure
that you start the assessment WELL BEFORE 11:59:59 AM IN TORONTO. If you start
even 1 second late, you will be unable to start and submit the assessment. Waiting
until the last possible moment to start will NOT be accepted as a valid excuse for missing
the test.
Once you begin, you will have 120 minutes to complete the test. In addition, MarkUs will
allow “late” submissions for up to 15 minutes after the deadline, for no penalty. This is
provided for you to submit your solution not to continue working on the test.
You are expected to stop writing and submit your work immediately after 120
minutes. The extra 15 minutes of time for submission are provided to allow you to
manage any technical difficulties you may encounter and so that you aren’t stressed
about the submission process. All files (including the aid sheet) must be submitted
within these 135 minutes to be graded. Late work will not be accepted.
Remember that MarkUs allows you to submit multiple times, and only your last on-time
submission will be marked. Make use of this feature and submit your work (even if it is not
completely done) by the deadline, to make sure you get credit for what you have done.
Technical requirements
It is your responsibility to make sure you have access to a reliable internet connection
during the test. I am unlikely to be able to accommodate any issues related to internet
connections or other technical issues on your end.
You will not be required to print anything in order to complete the test, although some of you
may find that helpful.
Asking questions during the test
If you have questions during the test, you can ask me using a Private Message on Piazza.
Private messages are normally disabled, but will be enabled during the test window. Piazza
will be turned to private messages from 6:30 AM on Saturday to Saturday 3pm.
Include the question number you are asking about.
If you have not yet signed up for Piazza, please do so before the test begins.

Getting announcements during the test
Please have Piazza on during the test. If I need to make an announcement to the class (e.g., a
correction of a typo), I will make it there.
No communication with others about the test
Do not discuss this test with anyone (including classmates via messaging/email, on Piazza,
etc.) until after the test has been graded and returned to you. Discussing the test with anyone
other than the course instructors during this time is not permitted.
Posting any part of the test to an online forum, such as Chegg, Stack Overflow, or anywhere
else online, is not permitted. This is true during the test and at any time afterwards.
During the test window, Piazza will be available only for private messages to the instructors.
This is for questions that may arise as you are writing the test.
Academic Integrity
Tests are intended to assess your own individual mastery of the course material. I believe that the
vast majority of students do not intend to cheat, and so to reduce stress for you, and to protect
your privacy, I am not using any kind of monitoring software (e.g. ProctorU). I am trusting you to
submit work that is only your own, and that is not done in whole or in part by anyone else
or with the aid of anyone else.
Academic integrity is important to students. Most academic offence cases come from students
who make a bad decision under pressure. Please remember that losing some marks on a test is a
much better outcome than committing an academic offence, which would likely involve a 0 on the
test plus additional grade penalties or transcript annotations.
