WELCOME MESSAGE

As coordinator of the HRM3010S Managing People at Work module, I wish to welcome you to the course. To operate effectively within the business world today an understanding of how to manage one of the most important resources at an organisation’s disposal, its people, is essential. This module is designed to deepen your interest and expertise in the area of Human Resource Management (HRM) and the study guide is designed to support your learning.

The discipline that concentrates on the management of people in organisations has witnessed a great deal of transformation over the past twenty years and while techniques and styles have obviously changed and evolved, the notion of achieving goals through managing people has remained the same.

To successfully complete this module, several learning activities are to be completed. Some of the learning activities will take place during our real time online sessions. They are designed to be engaging and to facilitate deeper understanding key concepts of this module. Teamwork is an important part of this module, and I encourage you to engage in team activities set for this module in an online environment such as Google Hangouts, Microsoft Team, Zoom etc. These activities, individual and team, should facilitate the attainment of the module learning outcomes.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemics this module is being delivered remotely utilising Zoom. Although we are not able to meet face-to-face let’s make the best of learning in an online environment and I hope that despite keeping physical distance, you will find the learning process enjoyable.

Please, read this study guide carefully. You should find the answer to any question you might have about the course in this document. However, should you require any clarification on any matter pertaining to this module, don’t hesitate to contact us.
We are looking forward to meeting you online.

Online Module Delivery via Zoom

The module will be delivered on Zoom through a combination of lectures, case discussions and seminars.
Kindly logging into Brightspace, go to “HRM3010S-Managing People at Work-2021/22 Summer”, click “My Class”, “Zoom”.

Each time there will be a mix of methods appropriate to the topic under discussion. Students’ own experience provides a unique perspective on the material, which greatly enhances the class learning. To maximize class learning from this experience, students are encouraged to share practical examples from their own professional and personal experience.
Your lecturer may choose to break your class into small groups during your sessions to work on small pieces of class work. When the lecturer enables breakout groups, you will be randomly placed into small groups within which you may use the chat function and/or the audio and video functions to discuss class matters with each other.
In addition for team work projects, it is advisable to look at Google Hangouts, Skype or Zoom as platforms which will enable you to work through your assessments in a virtual environment.

Background Details
It is hard to imagine managing organisations without managing people. HRM gives you a sound understanding of business and human resource management theory, as well as the valuable opportunity to understand how to apply that theory to practice in order for businesses to succeed. As a business graduate you will need to understand how organisations work and how the need to remain competitive has meant that firms deploy strategies that make the effective use of their resources. Having this understanding will greatly assist you in playing a key role in the employment market where there is a need for HR practitioners with an understanding of all aspects of management to facilitate strategic decision-making or in pursuing a career in general management with private, public or non-for-profit sector organisations.

Module Aims
The aim of this module is to provide you with a comprehensive overview of key aspects of the strategic management of human resources. It covers the following areas: HRM and strategy, talent management, human resource development, reward and performance management, strategies of retaining staff and strategies for downsizing the organisation, employee engagement and voice and HRM and corporate social responsibility.

The module focuses on seeking to critically appraise human resource management concepts and combines insights from strategic management, organisation behaviour and others.
