SUBORDINATE CLAUSES
1. Each of the following sentences contains one finite subordinate clause. For each sentence:
Identify the subordinate clause
Identify the function of the subordinate clause (subject, object, modifier etc )
a. That he left so early was a major disappointment
b. He claims that he is a doctor
c. The claims that he is qualified are false
d. I’ll leave you everything that I own
e. I wonder if they will offer him a job
2. Each of the following sentences contains a non-finite clause. For each one:
Classify the clause as for…to infinitive, -ing or -en
Indicate the type of phrase containing it (VP, NP, AdjP etc).
State the clause’s function within that phrase (subject, object, adjunct)
a. The man selling tickets is my cousin
b. Children born in hospital are more likely to survive
c. He was lucky to survive the ordeal
d. He regrets dividing their assets equally
e. Try to keep your back straight when lifting heavy objects
f. The time to do it is now
g. Anyone caught stealing will be punished
h. It was difficult for him to maintain his concentration
