Wilderness survival exercise – the situation
It’s late June, and you and a couple of your co-workers are driving back after a 3 hour hike in remote mountains in Tasmania. Unfortunately, you took a wrong turn on a remote fire trail somewhere high up in the mountains and got lost. You try to do a U-turn, but your old 4WD slips down an embankment and careers out of control. There’s a sudden crash, and then the lights go out….
When you wake up, the 4WD is on its side at the bottom of a 20 metre deep ravine. You are at least 25 kilometres from the nearest well travelled road with no houses nearby. One of your co-workers is in the passenger seat moaning, barely conscious. Her left leg is broken, her arm seems dislocated, and she looks like she may go into shock soon. Your other co- worker is standing outside, clutching his bloody arm, but appears all right. You take a deep breath and notice a shooting pain in your ribs, but you figure you’ll live.
The 4WD is stalled and there’s a icy rain beginning to fall. It’s now around 1:00 pm. You have 3.5 hours of daylight left and the temperature is expected to drop below freezing. A quick push of the horn shows that the battery is almost dead. You take a look in the glove compartment and behind the seats to see what you’ve got that could possible be of help.
