Workshop 7: Introduction to Evaluation
Part 1: Practical Exercises
Work with a partner. Assume that you have been tasked with a usability evaluation of Tesco¡¯s online shop for groceries by comparing it to their competitor Sainsbury¡¯s (available via http://www.tesco.com/groceries/ and http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries).
Create a study design for a testing procedure that allows you to compare the usability of both systems through an A/B test during which study participants would be invited to take part in a lab- based test, outlining the following aspects:
– Demographics of prospective study participants, number of participants needed
– Tasks that would be carried out by participants including a justification why the proposed
tasks would help you comprehensively assess the usability of both systems
– Methods of data collection including a justification of the chosen approaches
– Ethical considerations, and which materials are necessary with regards to ethics
Reflect
problematic. Are there any confounds that you would have to work around?
upon the proposed design, and try to identify areas in which your approach might be
Part 2: Theory
1. Explain the concept of usability inspection, and give an example of how it could be applied to a
mobile application. Write no more than 2-3 sentences.
2. Define the concept of confounds in empirical research, and give an example. Write no more than 2-3 sentences.
3. For the following scenarios, explain whether you would opt for a usability inspection or a testing protocol. For each scenario, justify your chosen approach in 1-2 sentences.
a. Tablet game for toddlers
b. E-book reader targeted at older adults
