CMP2019M Human-Computer Interaction
Part 1: Theory
Workshop 2: Core Concepts – Cognition
1. Define the concept of Chunking and explain why most people would find it easier to remember “09112001911” than “22053003552”, keeping in mind the date of terrorist attacks on the twin towers in the United States on September 11th 2011, and the emergency call number 911. Write no more than 3-4 sentences.
2. Name and explain three of the Gestalt principles. Write no more than 2-3 sentences each.
3. Find two digital examples each that demonstrate good or bad integration of Gestalt principles.
Give a one-sentence explanation what is good or bad, and why.
4. Find a non-digital example where Gestalt principles provide information to us. Write no more than 2-3 sentences.
5. Explain the cognitive process that takes place when a user responds to a visual stimulus present on a website. Write no more than 4-5 sentences.
6. Define the concept of Recognition with regards to the design of user interfaces. Write no more than 2-3 sentences.
Part 2: Practical Exercises
1. Using pen and paper, create a mock-up layout for a website on cat food with the following
elements:
– A logo and brand name.
– Main menu including at least the following elements: About, order sample, find suppliers.
– Images of happy cats having amazing meals.
– Quotes from overjoyed cat owners praising the quality of the product.
In your layout, ensure you include at least one example each for the law of grouping, the law of similarity, and the law of symmetry.
2. Find pictures of five different examples (other than those included in the lecture) that relate to the concept of Affordances. How could you leverage these affordances in digital interface design? Summarize your ideas for each example in no more than 2-3 sentences.
