Ubuntu VM (for Project, Labs)

Dear Students,

This semester, we will NOT be using Nunki for projects. We will instead use

a Virtual Machine and load it through VirtualBox which is a free software.

The VM has a graphical interface, so you can code directly on the VM.

<<< This VM can be used for LABs and the Project, which will be posted later along the semester. We will ONLY grade projects on this VM. This is to ensure everyone is fairly evaluated. >>>

Please follow these instructions to get your VM running, the process is almost

the same for all operating systems (NOTE: even if you already use Ubuntu,

you need to install this VM and test your project on this VM).

1 – Download this OVA file which contains an already installed Ubuntu 16.04:

 Visit this link:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1nKc3A0-gZN1s2B8WB-z8LzhYeVTz0Hhh

 Login to Google with your USC email (you cannot download the file
otherwise)

 Credentials:

o hostname:

ee450

o root-password:

ubuntu1604

 Please do not Update or Upgrade the VM: if an update or upgrade window

popped up in the VM, please just close it.

2 – Download and Install VirtualBox (for your operating system):

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

3 – Import the VM to VirtualBox: File -> Import Appliance -> Appliance To

Import (select the OVA file) -> Import

4 – Then run the VM by double clicking on “EE450_UBUNTU_1604” in the Oracle

VM VirtualBox manager

5 – To get network connection: Devices -> Network -> Network Settings ->

NAT and Click on the Blue Arrow -> Check “Cable Connected”

6 – Use “Ctrl-Alt-T” (or equivalent on MAC keyboards) to open a new terminal.

7 – You can now compile and write your code in the VM, or do LABs.

8 – To do coding, various editors can be used including the editor of your

choice: gedit is provided by Ubuntu and is on the VM, you can also use Sublime

Text

 Download the deb file from

 Double click

9 – We have uploaded a few documents to “Tutorials” module on Unix Commands

(which apply to Ubuntu as well)

Please share your concerns as a follow up to this note.

Thank you
