Individual Case Assignment
Report: An Information System for Stakeholders of The New Farm Deli and Café (‘The Deli’) https://newfarmdeli.com.au/
Assignment Brief:
In this assignment you are required to play the role of a trainee business analyst working on an information system solution for an organisation called The New Farm Deli and Café (often just called ‘The Deli’) https://newfarmdeli.com.au/
You work for an IT consultancy firm called Information Systems Wizards and have been called by The New Farm Deli and Café to contribute to the quality of their information systems.
The Brief from The New Farm Deli and Cafe (the Assignment Question)
The New Farm Deli and Cafe would like you to analyse an existing human activity system within the organisation’s overall business that suffers from issues and needs improvement (The situation is fictitious, and the issues you identify can also be fictitious, but the issues must be realistic based on what you know about the service providers in the real world). You are to suggest a new information system for a specific purpose, which can help The Deli, overcome those issues and perform better (the system can be an improved version of an existing system). You then need to come up with recommendations for improving on the identified human activity system so that the organisation can provide a more effective/efficient service or so that the organisation can be more successful.
Note: the chosen information systems can do anything you like. It is up to you to do some research around The New Farm Deli and Cafe s that you become familiar with their activity systems and can therefore consider the nature of the information systems that might be used. Remember, the issues you decide to address can be fictitious but must be realistic to the situation of The Deli.
Assignment Objectives:
Your completed report will demonstrate that you have:
• shown competence in finding, reading, analysing and synthesising materials from the course readings and applied this material in the writing of your report
• made use of the concepts, theories, models and ideas introduced in the course to understand and analyse the requirements to make well-founded recommendations
• researched and understood the purpose and operational context of the customer experience at the organisation in terms of the identified human activity system
Page 1 of 5

• identified, based on the afore-mentioned research, a new information system and its associated human activity system that you will recommend to the organisation together with a brief discussion of its

• described the expected impact of the new information system on the organisation’s performance and various
stakeholders; and

the discipline

Stage 1
Familiarisatio n with the business context and its activity systems.
Fundamental to the analysis required to design an information system is an understanding of the business:
Context. (5)
a) Brief description and background of the business in the case. What does the business sell or do? Where is the business located? A brief history if you can find it.
b) What are the key goals of the business? (you may have to make some assumptions here)
c) Who are the main stakeholders of the business? What value is likely being created for/by each of the various groups of stakeholders.
d) Are there similar businesses nearby? What are they and where? (Hint: Google maps will be useful here)
e) How successful does the business appear to be? How satisfied are its customers? Provide justification for your answer (i.e. how do you know?)
Activity systems (10)
a) Make a list of the activity systems you would expect to find in the business. Write one or two sentences to describe the process of the activity system.
b) Of the listed activity systems, choose one which you think might potentially be problematic: Name the activity system. Describe the issues and explain how those issues might impact on the business’s ability to create value.
c) Draw a rich picture which conveys understanding of the potentially problematic situation occurring in the activity system.

The New Farm Deli and Cafe s A potentially problematic activity system and a proposed IS
a) State and refer back to the potentially problematic activity system you identified in stage 2. Use the DeLone-McLean Model (include diagram) of Information System Success to describe the areas in which the potentially problematic human activity system is not successful and describe measures of success (efficiency, efficacy, and effectiveness) for the problematic human activity system (HAS). Explain using success measures where the problematic HAS falls short.
b) Refer back to the problematic activity system (HAS) you identified in stage 2 and take into consideration the competiveness from stage 3, come up with an improved/new information system for the potentially problematic activity system, which will better support the organizational goals.
(i)Briefly describe what your information system is (100 words).
(ii) Classify the new information system as either: front-end, back-end, customer-facing, or supplier-facing; and explain why.
(iii) Draw model using the BPMN notation of the improved/new process which would be used in the information system you are proposing.
