Assignment 2

This assignment is about the features and operations in NodeXL and Gephi.Pleaseperform the tasks below and upload three files to Moodle before 23:59 November 1.

  1. Data gathering and network visualization & description with NodeXL
  • Use the “Twitter Search Network” importer in NodeXL to retrieve tweets about the keyword “港珠澳大桥”, and make sure the scale (number of nodes) of the network is larger than one hundred.
  • Calculate network metrics (overall graph metrics, in/out degree, betweenness and closeness centralities) and explore the features of the network.
  • Adjust the visual properties and get a satisfying visualization.
  • Perform the clustering feature and layout each of the graph’s groups in its own box.

For this task, you need to submit:

A DOC word file – containing the overall summary of the network, description about the opinion leaders (the users who play important roles) of this keyword topic. You should include some network characteristic you learn from class to describe the network and the opinion leaders.

A PNG file – about the network visualization with the layout that each of the graph’s groups in its own box.

  1. Network visualization in Gephi
  • Load the datasets (“Assignment2 data.gephi”) into Gephi
  • Adjust the visual properties and get a satisfying visualization. (node size, node color, layout)
  • Visualize the network in the Preview panel and save the graph as PDF file.

For this task, you need to submit:

A PDF file – of the final visualization.

Operation instruction for the date import in NodeXL

  1. In thefirst task, you will characterize a social network on Twitter using the NodeXL Twitter Import feature. To use this feature, you must first sign up for an account at Twitter.com. You are not required to actually use the Twitter service yourself in order to carry out this research; you only have to sign up for an account
  2. Open NodeXL, be sure that you have the NodeXL tab selected on top, and select Import->From Twitter Search Network…
  3. The first time you use NodeXL Twitter search, in order to carry out Twitter searches, you must authorize NodeXL by your Twitter account. Select the option that “I have a Twitter account, but I have not yet authorized NodeXL to use my account to import Twitter networks. Take me to Twitter’s authorization page.” After you authorize NodeXL, it will return a verifying number and you should enter it within the NodeXL program.
  4. Now, back in the Twitter Search import window, make sure the option “Limit to __ Tweets” is set to 2000. Check the boxes that read “Add a Tweet column…” and “Expand URLs in Tweets.”
  5. Enter “港珠澳大桥” (without quotes) in the top-most box. Then click “OK” to start collecting tweets.

You may refer to the “NodeXL in class exercise Instruction” for other operational detail.
