In this part you are supposed to demonstrate your basic understanding of concepts taught in the unit by applying them directly to simple examples.
The recommended writing time for this part is 35 minutes.

Python Fragment Formulation (Questions 1 to 4)
In this group of questions you are asked to produce short pieces of Python code. When you are asked to “write a Python expression” that evaluates to a specific concept you can either give the expression in one line or break it down into several lines where you assign intermediate concepts to variables. In any case, the last expression you write must represent the required concept.
For example, if the questions asks you to “write Python expression that corresponds to the arithmetic mean of two numbers a and b”, you could give a one line expression
(a + b)/2
or break it down with an intermediate assignment
s=a+b s/2
Note that you are never required to use the print function. Question 1
Assume that a, b, and c are variables that refer to integer objects and consider the Python expression: a-(b**(c-1))
Give an equivalent version of this expression by removing as many parentheses as possible.
Question 2
Assume the variables starts and ends refer to lists of start and end times of a set of events (given according to some fixed order of the events). Here, the times are given as integers referring to the number of days from a specific starting date. For example:
starts = [10, 15, 28, 23]
ends = [17, 16, 31, 30]
In this example, event 0 started at day 10 and ended at day 17 and so on.
We say that two events overlap if there is at least one day that both events have in common. For
instance in the above example the events 0 and 1 as well as the events2 and 3 overlap.
Now assume that i and j are arbitrary indices corresponding to two events. Give a Python expression that evaluates to True of and only if events i and j are non-overlapping, i.e., there is no day during which both events were active.

Question 3
A king in chess can move exactly one square in an arbitrary direction (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal). This means that in the following situation the two kings do not attack each other.
Assume we have four variables c1, r1, c2, r2 that refer to positive integers representing the position of two kings on a chess board. Give a Python expression that evaluates to True if and only if the two kings attack each other (we can assume that the two positions are not equal).

A sequence a is called a suffix of sequence b if b is at least as long as a and the last len(a) elements of b are exactly the elements in a (in the right order). For instance:

For each of the questions in this section, we are looking for a short answer of around 3-5 sentences. Try to be precise and coherent and use the technical terms covered in the unit where relevant.

Advanced Problem Solving: Bike Lanes (Questions 20-21)
City halls around the country want to introduce bike lanes to their local street network. They want to do that in a way that connects all major points of interest in their city but at the same time disrupts the car traffic as little as possible. For that the total distance covered by bike lanes should be minimised. Moreover, they want to offer a web page that allows bike riders to obtain a route between any two points of interest that only uses street segments with bike lanes.
Your company aims to design algorithms for both problems: a) the selection of street segments that should be equipped with bike lanes and b) finding bike routes in the corresponding sub network.

In this question, we provide an algorithmic solution for the bike routing problem once a (rooted) tree of bike lanes is available.

Consider first the simplified situation where you assume that the path from a to b runs through the root of the rooted tree, as in example 1 below (a correct explanation plus implementation under this assumption is worth up to 5 marks).
Then, consider what changes if the path does not run through the root? Can you find another vertex that takes the role of the root in the simplified case? See example 2 below.

Question 22
Paul is a teacher who just finished grading the final exam in a class. He has a list of the students¡¯ scores on the final exam in a particular order (not necessarily sorted), and he wants to reward his students. He has planned to reward his students fairly based on these two rules:
1. All students must receive at least one reward.
2. Any given student must receive strictly more rewards than an adjacent student (a student
immediately to the left or to the right) with a lower score and must receive strictly fewer rewards than an adjacent student with a higher score.
Write a function rewards(scores) that takes in a list of scores and returns a list of rewards that has a minimal sum while satisfying the two rules above. Assume that all the students have different scores.
For example:
Before writing your function, give at least one paragraph with an explanation of your implementation. You can write this paragraph before or after the function or also as a docstring.
